Some dry fly action using ants!
Friday, 08 October 2010 12:57

The warmer weather, greater snow melt and the odd shower we have had during the week has seen the water level of the Thredbo River rise quite a bit over recent days. Nonetheless its clarity remains. The punters that hit the streams during the opening weekend has seen the trout become slightly more cautious in hitting the fly however searching some of the more difficult to get to stretches and faster water will still see you getting amongst the action. There are still good numbers of (rainbows) fish in spawning mode and there have been a few more good sized brown trout showing up. I have been flicking the odd dry around such as a possum emerger and have been greeted with a smile. There is no denying it that down deep with the usual suspects is still the way to go however once the water levels settle and get into a groove I reckon its game on for the dry. I managed to fish several of the feeder creeks around home during the week and on all occasions there was the odd trout rising to flying ants. Using such a pattern always suckered the trout to the fly. Bring it on. Those streams that are not great recipients of snow melt will be ideal for such fishing anytime now. Stay tuned. David
